Surgery for Miracle

Miracle was born with a deformed paw.  Her owners were told it was purely “cosmetic”.  In January, now a year old, Miracle’s owners decided to release her along with her sister and mom to a nearby shelter in Kansas; the shelter entrusted GCCR with care of the three "Dodge City Girls".

With GCCR resources, orthopedic specialists determined Miracle has a serious congenital condition that will require surgery to correct.  Walking on her malformed paw while her bones were still growing, caused her ulnar and femur bones to twist and cross.  You can see from this video how Miracle limps and tries not to bear weight on her left front paw.  But with true Cavalier spirit, she still runs and plays, trying to do all the things other healthy dogs can do.

Without surgery, Miracle’s condition will worsen and her pain will increase.  GCCR is raising funds to help pay for the surgery she needs to help her lead a normal, healthy life with a forever family.

Miracle is only a year old and has her whole life ahead of her.  Please help us give the miracle of running and playing without pain to this sweet girl.  Any donation amount is welcome and appreciated!.

UPDATE    On March 26, 2013, Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital performed a radical reconstruction of Milly's leg and paw.  Part of her leg bone was cut, a metal plate was fixed to strengthen the leg, and her wrist was fused.  The surgeon was extremely pleased with the results; the prognosis is good for relieving her lifelong pain.

UPDATE 4-23-13  Milly goes weekly to Yorkville Animal Hospital for bandage changing.  A long splint has been cut back, sutures have been removed, and healing is progressing better than could be expected.  Milly's foster family tries to restrict her activity, but it's apparent that she feels wonderful and wants to run!  The healing leg is quickly becoming weight bearing.  Though she will never have full flexibility in the repaired leg she certainly will be an "all fours" Cavalier!  Adoption applications have been reviewed and Milly will soon go to her forever home.  Hurray!

Milly and Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue thank Cavalier lovers who generously donated toward the cost of Milly's surgery!
