ADOPTION PENDING YIPPEE! Needs to be the only dog in the home and no small children. Monroe aka Freckles came to GCCR as a Cavalier/Cocker mix. We’re not sure where the Cavalier is in him, other than he can be a sweet lapdog and loves his people. Monroe’s previous dad became ill and could no longer take care of him, but he was very sad to let him go. He is probably the smartest dog his foster family has ever had. He knows many commands, loves to play fetch, jumps and dances on his hind feet (which also comes in handy for stealing food off the counter!). He loves long walks and has learned to use good manners with others who cross his path. He eats quietly alongside his foster siblings and doesn’t ever go after their food. He can be noisy but only if the sidewalk in front of the house is busy, he likes to bark from the safety of the other side of the window to let them know that they need to keep moving! He also protects us from the barky dog on the other side of the fence in the back yard. We are working on toning down the noise by treating him for not barking! He has a couple of toys that he will not share, and sometimes has issues sharing his people with the other dogs. He wants his attention and lap time too! Monroe gets edgy when the house fills with visitors who move suddenly or are loud, but with supervision, has been patient with gentle small children. He is not often left alone, but when he has been, he can get anxious and into mischief (the food on counter!). After a lifetime of being the one and only, even with several months with two mild-mannered Cavaliers, it is clear that Monroe is an alpha dog who would prefer to be the only pet in a family with no young children. Someone retired or who works from home or part time would be ideal. A fenced yard and a willingness to have a bed buddy would be best. If you are looking for a smart, loving “one and only”, Monroe could be the buddy you are looking for!
