** ADOPTION PENDING ** Nelson is a 10 year old Ruby boy with the energy of a five year old. He has begun his new life outside of a crate with gusto! and truly enjoys being on his human's lap, sofa, bed, and right at his human's heels. Nelson is a great watch dog and will alert his human of any new noise. Because of his new-found freedom, he dislikes being without his human and would prefer someone to be with him most of the day. Nelson's friendly with every stranger, and if unrestrained will chase after everyone in sight; he needs a fenced yard to keep him safe. Nelson's comfortable with other dogs, but doesn't really need their companionship and never learned to play with toys. With his big brain and young body he would do great at agility/obedience training, lure coursing, barn hunting, or if his human wants to be more sedentary, as a therapy dog. Take a look at the Facebook page for Poppins: From Puppy Mill to Older Dog Advocate. See what an older dog can become! UPDATE Nelson's drug cocktail including Vetmedin has controlled his coughing. On meds he could have an energetic life for several years -- there's no sure way to predict progression of MVD. One thing is for sure -- Nelson LOVES his humans!

Special Needs

Nelson has a Grade IV heart murmur. He shows no symptoms of heart failure. As for any Cavalier, the presence of a murmur should be monitored each year. Radiographs of current heart are available upon request. UPDATE A month after arrival Nelson began sneezing, coughing. Radiographs show heart enlargement. A drug cocktail including Vetmedin has controlled the cough.
